Ranier Maria Rilke was a Bohemian-Austrian poet and novelist who lived from 1875 to 1926. He is widely recognized as one of the most lyrically intense German-language poets. The project involved the creation of a self-published booklet relying on traditional art, and one of Rilke’s unnamed poems is depicted within. This booklet showcases a different hand-lettered layout and acrylic ink wash on each page, creating a new energy for every line. The juxtaposition of strict hand-lettering and organic backgrounds questions different ideas of perfection, just like the poem questions different ideas of purpose. The type either makes a bold presence or melts away, representing the search to find ourselves.
